Hiya!

Rachel Keane (RK) is a Brooklyn based dancer, photographer, and Jack of Many Trades. RK is a seasoned dance improviser who oftentimes doesn’t really understand why anyone would do anything other than improvise, if we’re being honest (but they can if you need them to). As an artist, RK seeks opportunities to collaborate with consent and strive toward justice and equity in the field.

Currently, RK is the appointed photographer for Movement Research and Danspace Project ‘23/’24 seasons. As their work as rk-co image continues to emerge and define itself, RK is eager to bring their unique style of photojournalism to artists, families, and maybe even coffee tables across the US. They also look forward to teaching others how to be embodied photographers because gatekeeping is outdated and it’s not hard to learn this stuff when there is access to it!

My Story

RK got their start as the student photographer for SUNY Brockport’s Dance Department where they graduated with a BFA in Dance. This environment allowed RK to jump headfirst into the fast paced, low light environment of photographing live performances. Working this position also gave RK the opportunity to break down perceived hierarchies in their own training as they did not receive mentorship from a professor or previously trained photographer; rather their feedback was given from friends, peers, and other like-minded creators. The outcome and usage of these photos was entirely dictated by RK, teaching them the importance of advocating for what they believe the intended purposes of their art are.

Since then, they've shot live performances and events across New York State, but have found it difficult to find affordable classes and access to mentoring in the industry. This has led them to branch out to work in newborn and family photography, headshot/portrait photography, creative story-telling, and even a few weddings and social events. For the past decade of research, RK has sought to find the middle ground of their somatic movement ideologies and photography. This has led them to begin to practice and, most recently via Movement Research’s MELT programing, to teach what they lovingly refer to as “Embodied Photography”.
